Now With Picture!

I’ve resolved, new year’s style, to update this website at least once a year. Done! Registration fee worthwhile.

Big news! As of this past August I am a full-time sound designer/mixer at Clean Cuts Music and Sound Design! It’s a fabulous post-production studio with an absolutely world-class staff.

Music people, I’m still here for you. Prodigy Audible is still open for business and I am still available for all of your recording/mixing needs. The only difference is that now I’m pretty “Hollywood”. The t-shirts and jeans have been replaced by cardigans and much more expensive jeans.

Mid-Summer Updates

It’s almost August. That’s crazy.

A couple things off the bat:

1) I now live in Baltimore, MD. That’s one less excuse for missing your show if you are in a Baltimore band.

2) The studio (Prodigy Audible) is coming along very nicely. We’ve been incredibly busy and things just keep getting better. If you haven’t checked in with us in a while, you should. Hit me up anytime for a tour.

Some recent work:

A lot of great projects are happening this summer. Here’s the short list:

Sea Couch (Loveasaurus Records) have just started their debut LP. We’ve been recording in various Baltimore basements and having a lot of fun. Everything is being done live and it sounds wonderful.

The new Matta Gawa Record, Tambora, is mixed and mastered and set to be released August 9th on New Atlantis Records and Sundmagi Records. Face-melting stuff.

Wise Eyes are back at Prodigy Audible to record their first LP, having just completed an EP earlier this year. See previous posts.

Also in the studio are The Brothers McGinnis (incredibly fun Irish rock), Retro Deluxe (this time with twang), Wyoming Exploded (my band. What what!), Akris (Doom rock!!) and many more. Clips and release information to follow!

Studio Additions:

While the core gear remains the same, I’ve been buying up instruments, amps, and mics like they’re going out of style. A few of my favorite new toys:

- A vintage Ludwig Arcolite snare (5x14in). A nice compliment to the studio’s Maryland and Pork Pie snares. A drummer recently brought in a Ludwig Black Beauty 5×14 and the Arcolite does more or less the same thing with a bit more “bite”.

- A 1969 Ampeg Jet J-12 guitar amp. John Goodmanson (record producer/hero) called this his favorite small guitar amp. It has a really unique sound that just sits perfectly in dense mixes.

- A 70′s Sunn Concert Bass head. This thing kills through the Ampeg 1×15 cab. A Doom Rock band that I worked with the other day had this and the Lead version of the Concert running into an Ampeg 8×10 and a Sunn 2×15 cab. I’m now fairly well convinced I need a Sunn 2×15.

Wise Eyes

Alright, the spring update. I’m told it’s getting warmer. It’s been 74 degrees in the studio since last spring so I’m afraid I’m not the best source on the subject.

First up,

Wise Eyes, a shiny new band from Bowie, MD (home of Prodigy Audible, our recording studio, thank you very much) is releasing their debut E.P. It’s available for streaming right now! Have a click on that link 8 words back or do a quick search on www.jango.com. Physical copies are following soon. It’s an insanely energetic, fun record. We recorded the whole thing in about two days at Prodigy Audible back in January. Rocks.

And Then,

I’m currently wrapping up mixes on the new Matta Gawa record. I’m really excited to share this one but I’ve gotta wait.

Finally,

Check out my new venture, www.theaudiorepairshop.com! I’ve been working on guitar amps and electronics for a while and, you know, I’m going to be stepping that up a bit and offering repair and assembly services to more people. Shoot me an email if you’ve got something in need of fixin’!

Ben & Eleanor — Story of My Life

The new Ben & Eleanor record is up on Bandcamp! Consider this a pre-release. The hard copies are coming soon with all the fancy artwork and packaging that you’d expect. We recorded it at Omega Recording Studios (that’s their Music Man in the picture), Prodigy Audible, and Ben’s living room. Have a listen to a few of my favorites…

While you’re there, check out the first record — Slave to Time. It’s epic.

Bow-Legged Gorilla, Sea Couch

Last call everyone! It’s time to head out to the Hamilton Arts Collective in Baltimore! The Loveasaurus Records release/debut show is tonight starting at 5 with a potluck and featuring everyone on the compilation. What compilation? The compilation that’s going to be available at the show!

Here are the last two (epic) tracks on the comp. The first is a piece by Bow-Legged Gorilla. It’s incredibly meditative and atmospheric. This guy can set a mood. The second is by Sea Couch. They’re wonderful. The song is gorgeous and they’re the nicest people you’re likely to ever meet.

Bow-Legged Gorilla was tracked live (one vocal and guitar) in the Polish Home Hall in Curtis Bay, Baltimore and the Sea Couch song was done at the Pow Wow in Baltimore.

Jeff Brunell, Totem

The penultimate Loveasaurus Records single from the upcoming compilation, Eat a Heart. This one features Jeff Brunell and Totem. We recorded both of these songs in the Polish Home Hall (mentioned in previous posts) in Curtis Bay, Baltimore. Take a listen!

Jeff Bothe, We Used to be Family

The Loveasaurus singles just keep coming (see previous posts). Today’s release features Jeff Bothe and We Used to be Family. The Bothe track features stellar songwriting and a drunken guest chorus from much of the Loveasaurus team (I won’t call anybody out specifically but you know who’s in there). Think The Microphones meet, oh I don’t know, The Hidden Cameras. We Used to be Family bring on the dBs. Man I love muted trumpets. We tracked the Family song in the Polish Home Hall in Curtis Bay, Baltimore. It was a massive room and I wish I could track drums there any time I please. See Previous posts for pics.

Enjoy!

Her Fantastic Cats, Ike Shark

Single #2 from Loveasaurus Records is out! These two tracks are from Her Fantastic Cats and Ike Shark, respectively. We tracked the Her Fantastic Cats track in a decked-out Baltimore basement and the Ike Shark piece was done in the massive Polish Home Hall (see previous posts). One amp, a couple mics, No extra reverberation needed.

Check ‘ em out!

MacGregor Burns, The Great Tap Root

Sunday surprise! Every day this week (starting… now!) Loveasaurus Records will be releasing two tracks from the debut compilation we recorded late last year. This leads up to this Friday, Feb. 4th when the Loveasaurus crew are doing their record release show in Baltimore. I can’t overstate how much fun this project was! These are some seriously great people.

Here are the first two tracks on the compilation from MacGregor Burns and The Great Tap Root. Both were recorded live in a beautiful Baltimore City basement. There were noises, there was bleed, it was great. The recordings hopefully pay more than a little homage to a few lo-fi favorites. It’s my-fi. Check out the Loveasaurus Records website for details and for cryin’ out loud, go to the show on Friday!

Upcoming Shows and A Few Clips

Hello 2011! It’s gonna be a good year.

Down to business. There are a couple shows in February that you should go see.

Friday, Feb. 4th — The Loveasaurus Records Inaugural Event @ Hamilton Arts Collective, Baltimore, MD

This is gonna be huge. It will be preceded by a bicycle boombox parade that will travel from Penn Station to the show. Expect incredible performances from… MacGregor Burns, Great Tap Root, Her Fantastic Cats, Ike Shark Inc., Jeff Bothe, We Used to Be Abbreviated, Jeff Brunell, Totem, Bow-Legged Gorilla, and Sea Couch… Gasp. This will also be the release of the Loveasaurus Records Compilation that we recorded last year featuring songs from all of the afore-mentioned artists!

Wednesday, Feb. 9th — Wyoming Exploded @ Joe Squared, Baltimore, MD

I’m playing bass for these guys. We’ll show you a good time, promise! Check the Wyoming Exploded Bandcamp page for the first two EPs. We’ll be playing songs from the third release and the first full-length which is going to come out later this year (recording commences next month).

Saturday, Feb. 26th — The Ash Lovelies Record Release @ Artisphere, Arlington, VA

We recorded and mixed this record way back in 2010. It’s gonna be a great show!

And Then This.

I’ve been meaning to get more clips up on this thing. Here’s a little sampling of my 2010. All recorded and mixed by this guy.
